Going public

Yes, you can have a fully public dynamic map and potentially embed it on your website.

But there are several things to check before you can go public:

1 – Check if you can embed a dynamic map on your website

In many cases dynamic maps can be embedded relatively simply within iframes on another website, similar to embedding YouTube videos. The possibility will depend on your web hosting platform.

2 – You must not violate data protection laws or publish sensitive content for public viewing

Public maps must not contain any sensitive personal data or break GDPR laws. This is an important consideration for clients who upload customer and prospect names and postcodes. Any data that can identify individuals’ addresses or other personal details must be kept private. (See official UK data protection legislation.)

Maproom will look through the content of your maps before making them public to check they do not contain personal records or other sensitive material that might be deemed illegal or inflammatory in a public context (e.g. military or industrial secrets).

3 – Are you expecting heavy traffic to the map (above 1,000 daily)?

We primarily use a 3rd-party service called Mapbox for serving dynamically loaded global vector map tiles. Mapbox is a technically advanced competitor to Google Maps, and like Google Maps (and their other online mapping rivals), it is free for low-volume map loads, but it charges fees for heavy usage.

Currently, Mapbox is significantly cheaper than Google Maps for high-volume usage, and it only starts imposing fees above 50,000 map loads per month. This is perfectly adequate for the vast majority of websites. However, if you want to embed your maps on a heavily trafficked website, read the information below about heavy usage fees.

50,000 map loads per month is a generous free tier. If your website has average traffic under 20,000 visitors per month (which is most websites), you will not face any extra charges. However, if your website has high traffic or you otherwise expect your public maps to get more than 50,000 monthly views, you need to pay serious attention to the pricing shown in the table below.

Mapbox pricing checked November 2025

Monthly loadsCost per 1,000
Up to 50,000Free
50,001 – 100,000$5 per 1,000 loads
100,001 – 200,000$4 per 1,000 loads
200,001+$3 per 1,000 loads
1 million+Negotiable

To give an example, a website with regular 150,000 monthly visitors to pages with embedded maps would face Mapbox costs up to $450 per month.

From this you can see that heavy traffic fees are potentially far higher than the cost of your pass for Maproom’s Dynamic Mapping Suite…

But don’t worry! We have systems in place to keep our own fees as reasonably low as possible for the majority of our clients, whilst ensuring that any heavy public usage can be facilitated for the small number of clients who need it.

Metering

As part of the process for helping you to go public with your maps, we will create a Mapbox token specific to you / your organisation, so that public usage can be metered. (Or you can give us a Mapbox token code if you already have one.)

By default we impose a 50,000 monthly cap on public map loads. This protects both you and us from the risk of unexpected high usage fees.

We will monitor your public maps usage and alert you if you are approaching the default cap.

Viewing figures for your public maps will show up in the Statistics section of your Dashboard

Unless you ask for a higher default cap, your public map(s) will automatically stop loading if the meter hits 50,000 loads in a given month, until the 1st of the following month when the meter resets to 0.

If you set up direct billing with Mapbox for high traffic costs then we will raise the cap according to your instructions, e.g. if you want a cap set at max 70k loads / $100 Mapbox fees per month.

Alternatives to Mapbox for heavily trafficked maps

As mentioned above, Mapbox is currently the most technically advanced system for dynamically loading global vector map tiles, and it is cheaper than Google Maps. Another viable alternative for serving heavily trafficked vector map tiles is MapTiler. Their pricing is actually higher for low-trafficked maps, but makes a savings difference if you’re looking at, say, a quarter of a million monthly map loads.

There are also some options for raster (as opposed to vector) map tiling systems, though the drawback of raster map tiling is that the maps are slightly fuzzy.

In general, we recommend trying the Mapbox-based system first to at least gauge how much traffic your public map is regularly receiving. Then, if you find the costs of serving heavily trafficked maps via Mapbox prohibitive, we will offer alternative map tiling as a bespoke option.
