Set a radius with auto-calculating population and household figures

Demo live map

Hover over the radii (or tap on touch device) to see popup info about them…

Auto-calculation of population and households

If you plot your radius anywhere in the UK or Republic of Ireland, there will automatically be a calculation of population within your radius area. This information will show in a popup as you hover over the radius.

The calculations for England, Scotland and Wales include both population and number of households and come from Census 2021 figures for individual postcode centroids. For Northern Ireland the population data is calculated from a comparison with Data Zones (DZs) boundaries within your radius, and for the Republic of Ireland the data is derived from Output Areas (OAs) within your radius.

1 How to set a radius

You can set a radius around any marker really easily in its Edit settings. Tick the “Show radius around location” checkbox then enter a figure and the unit – miles, kilometres or metres.

The default radius colour is blue, but you can choose a different colour by clicking the eyedropper icon and selecting from the colour picker modal. Press Enter or click outside the colour picker modal to select, then Save.

You can plot multiple radii, and they can overlap each other. Notice that dynamically calculated overlap percentages will show in the popups as you move your cursor through the radii.

2 How to turn off population and households

If the auto-calculations are not useful for you, turn them off in Display Settings.
