Licensing terms for downloadable postcode maps

Maproom’s downloadable postcode maps – i.e. postcode maps that are supplied as PDFs and other vector art file formats – are subject to the restricted licensing terms set out here.

1. The Licence

Maproom grants Licensees the right to use, edit and print Maproom’s postcode maps within the Licensee’s organisation without any time limit.

2. Permitted Uses

– reference, planning and research purposes
– reports and presentations
– video or TV graphics and set dressing
– marketing and promotional material
– printed posters displayed within the Licensee’s premises
– on the Licensee’s website as illustrative content pertaining specifically to the Licensee’s organisation

3. Prohibited Uses

a) Licensees are not permitted to sell Maproom’s postcode maps as posters, atlases or in any other printed format to the general public, whether in their initial state of supply or edited, modified or augmented in any way.

b) Licensees are strictly prohibited from extracting Maproom’s postcode paths and polygons for use in consumer apps, GIS applications or any other distributed software.

c) Licensees are strictly prohibited from utilising Maproom’s mapping products in any product or service that competes with or undermines Maproom’s own mapping products and services.

Notice regarding detection of Prohibited Uses: In the construction of postcode polygons, Maproom has created numerous digital signatures that make it easy for us to detect unlicensed usage.

4. Definition of Licensee

a) By default, the Licensee is the purchaser of the postcode map.

b) The rights granted are personal to the Licensee and non-transferable, whether the Licensee is an individual or acting on behalf of a company. Licensees may not sell, sublicense or give away free any Maproom postcode map base, whether in its initial state of supply or edited, modified or augmented in any way, to another party.

c) Freelance graphic designers are advised to ask their clients to purchase the postcode maps so that the clients are the Licensees without ambiguity.

d) Print houses are advised to ask their clients to purchase the postcode maps so that the clients are the Licensees without ambiguity. Printing our postcode maps to sell to the general public is prohibited.

e) Cartographers, geospatial developers or other GIS or coding engineers, whether freelance or within a company, are strictly bound by all restrictions detailed in section 3 above. For client work, such users are advised to ask their clients to purchase the postcode maps so that the clients are the Licensees without ambiguity.

f) A purchaser may request to change the name of the Licensee by applying to [email protected]. (E.g. if a designer has purchased the map in their name but wants to pass the licence on to their client.)

5. Copyright and Credit

Maproom’s postcode maps are built by us using OS and Royal Mail open data as reference. They include a copyright notice typically worded as:

© Maproom.net. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights [year]. Contains Royal Mail data © Royal Mail copyright and database right [year].

This copyright notice may be restyled or moved, but not removed, hidden or cropped out of the final published version of the map.

Licensees must ensure that all parties handling the artwork are aware of these copyright terms.

Permission must be sought from Maproom for any usage not outlined in the terms laid out above. Queries can be directed to [email protected]
