This interactive map shows listed buildings in England using a large dataset of almost 379,000 sites drawn up by Historic England.
The map opens at a level showing England with a scattering of sites showing in red circles. As you zoom progressively deeper, more and more circles show up, right down to maximum detail at street level. Tap any circle for a popup infobox showing that site’s listing status, number, and a link to its page on Historic England.
You may already know that large datasets usually crash a web page. However, using Mapbox, we can pinpoint and label hundreds of thousands of sites without crashing. With the labels and popups, the map is fun to explore as well as being a highly informative and functional method for visualising locations in a huge dataset.
The map also demonstrates the ability to switch between streetmap and satellite views.
